Combustible Days

By Chad Hollis

It was not in my dream where you said
they played “Daddy’s Little Girl”
and even your father cried/smiled
or where you said no one ever took you seriously
about those things before

In my dream I said
the days evaporate like gasoline
in fact, I said the days combust

It was not in my dream where you said
you tried on men like hats
to see how you looked
in the mirror with them

In my dream I said
when the music stops
they’ll have to identify the corpses
by their dental records

It was not in my dream where you said
you opened the card
I had sent to your wedding

In my dream I said
it was the bill for the hat
