By Chad Hollis
loneliness creeps in
as I sit and stare at your sleeping back
a subliminal road block
so I study again the familiar curve
of the nape of your neck
memorizing it as I etch it upon my brain
as I have all the symmetrical lines of your body
from the backside
I can keep time with the steady rise
and fall of your breathing pattern
dodging the sharp elbow perfectly positioned
to prevent my unwanted approach
it’s getting all too painfully familiar to me
as I learn to swallow my sorrow in silence
looking forward to the darkness again
as it falls across my face
sometimes I converse with you in my head
practicing what it is I will say
when the morning comes, but tonight
I cry alone in the dark
