By Chad Hollis
And then there was nothing
No daydream journeys
No fairy tales come true
As I sit in the corner
Memories of what never were
Race through my mind
And in that second I saw you
Taunting me with words
Haunting me with desires
Long ago, I put out the fire
leaving the heartwood desiccated, dry
Ablaze with one spark
A snake-wisp of smoke lingers
And again it’s you
You know the mask I wear
I watch as you look through me
Tell me, what is it that you see?
I take you in with subtle shades of consideration
The shadow of your emptiness I know too well
I’ve seen the cruel light that taints our innocence
And I long to stay here in the darkness
That shelters our souls
For in the light
I was Jesus for a day
Come feel the wounds that won’t heal
The void in my heart patched with thorns
I lay dying
Much like the candle flame drowning
in transcending pools of wax
Never bright enough to burn away
The mark of distrust in my eyes…
But here in the darkness, I am complete
Protected for another time
Under the fallen crescent of a waning moon
…with you
